Ghosts of binges past can turn you into a food Scrooge.  So why continue to dodge holiday celebrations to avoid the fattening feasts that go with them?

Holidays are for connecting with family and friends. Unfortunately, most events come with food attached.

Follow these diet tips to make merry without adding a pound.

Choose Wisely

Scan the buffet for shrimp with cocktail sauce--virtually fat-free and high in protein, iron, and the antioxidant lycopene.

Exercise Discipline

Switch out of holiday mode as soon as the party's over; don't turn Thanksgiving through New Year's into one long binge.

Enjoy The Experience Without Overindulging

Save calories for only new, interesting foods; have a taste of each.

Distraction Can Be A Good Thing

Take your camera and be the designated photographer; you can't eat while snapping wriggling kids.

Don't Bring The Party Home

Indulge in your favorite holiday treat at a restaurant with a friend or at a party instead of testing your diet willpower by having it around the house.  If it's there, trust me, you'll eat it.

Don't Booze It Up

Alternate alcoholic drinks with diet-friendly calorie-free sparkling water.  Wine or the occasional spiked egg-nog will lower your will power and your cravings will get the best of you.

Practice Portion Control

If you've had enough to eat but others are still picking, dump the plate and load up a fresh one with salad or something from the vegi appetizer tray.   Picking at this will keep you and your senses occupied while not compromising your dietary goals.

Get Support

It can be hard to maintain a weight loss program, particularly during the holidays.  Ask your family and friends for support.  Try to find an exercise buddy or hire a personal trainer.

Socialize.

Brush up your small talk; talking slows down eating.

Plan Ahead

Don't arrive at the holiday party starving; the fat in an ounce of nuts and the protein in a glass of skim milk will blunt your appetite.   If the event is pot luck, bring a desert that you can enjoy.  Healthy Cake!
